Katie Black

katie

Since joining Ian’s On the ID Trail project, Katie has learned that posting biographical information online is a really bad idea; but really, what’s life without a little danger? Katie is mostly a wonderful bundle of joy. What puts a bee in her bonnet, however, is the idea that some crank may be listening in on her digital phone conversations without violating her reasonable expectation of privacy. Consequently, Katie happily joined the Kerr Nation and is currently focusing on how consent intersects with libertarian paternalism and soft surveillance. In addition to being a master chicken impersonator, Katie is also a master sushi eater, slow runner, potter, and euchre player. She dreams of ubiquitous integrity, honest world leaders, and happy times for all earth’s children.

RESEARCH

  • She is currently researching the effects of soft paternalism, soft surveillance, and cognitive factors on the utility of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Document Act’s proscribed consent-gathering process. (2006)
  • For Prof. Chandler at the University of Ottawa’s Common Law Section, Katie briefly investigated the questions: what is a technique, what are the attributes of the technical civilization, and is law itself a technique that exposes us to the same pitfalls produced by the technical civilization. (2006)
  • Katie researched and wrote on the discriminatory effects of normative-based education policy and the issue of assessable education for Ontario’s disabled. This directed research paper served as a brief for an accessibility advocacy platform and policy reform program supported by the University of Toronto Arts and Science Students’ Union. (2003-2004)
  • Investigated geometric and feature spatial learning in rats and pigeons from 2002-2004.
